As the days get slightly longer and the ice starts to recede in the UK, thoughts turn to the wonderful sun and sand in Tarifa. Fond memories of lazy mornings and action packed afternoons - not to mention a spot of DIY to keep the studio ship shape. Cant wait to be back in the fresh air!

Winter Blues Beckon

Been meaning to put a couple of pictures on from our October visit ... looking at them just heightens the sense of impending winter blues, as the temperature drops and the snow falls in the UK. Anyway, Tarifa is always an inspiration and has plenty of weather of its own to keep the mind and body fresh. Can't wait to be back in our little 'place in the sun'.

A Relaxing Summer as our 'Little Blue Wonder' finally arrives

Had a very chilled three weeks in Tarifa - once again the weather was very unpredictable but we had plenty of sunshine and it was windy most days (even a bit of Poniente to cool things down a bit). There were definitely fewer people visiting this summer (mostly Spanish on short breaks) and we were told by many owners that there was a lot less money being spent in the bars and shops.

Fortunately, we got our lovely new toy to keep us busy having fun. Our little blue wonder, aka 'Maite', the Piaggio Ape Calessino 3 wheel moto carro. Lots of people smiled, some laughed and others just played it cool - but wherever she went, the little blue wonder was certainly noticed and such great fun to drive around in (despite a few teething troubles like rubbing brake shoes).

Summer is just around the corner

Had a great time out in Tarifa - only a week but full of so many different wonderful things. Like glorious sun, street art (Banksy beware), sea fog like we have never seen in 6 years ... oh, and shoes, lots of shoes and bags and jewelry and ... !!!

Also, saw some intersting sights - like Guzman getting the bird and a new arrival on the beach, oh, and Barack Obama dropped in to say 'Hola', only kidding but there were some very impressive Arfican Art images in the open air exhibition on the Alameda by the port:

Finally, some fun was had and a new toy was taking for a test drive - once I could find the beach!!!

I got chance to test my latest Naish Helix kite on the crystal clear water, which was great - if only I was quite as good as the professionals in this Naish Helix video!!!

An Unexpected Solo Break

Had to use up my remaining leave before the end of March, so I got a special pass from 'her indoors' for a few days out in the studio on my own. The weather must have been pretty wild ever since Xmas, as there was an extra couple of metres of sand on the beach front that had buried all the wooden walkways out over the beach. I also saw rocks in the surf up near the island that haven't been exposed for at least 6 years:

Anyway, it was pretty good weather (after an inital cloudy start) and I managed to buy that kite buggy that I have been thinking about for a while now. It was fun skimming along the empty beach in front of the Stadio de Futbol in a gusty Force 6 off shore - wondering 'How the heck do I stop this thing'!

There wasn't really any kiting (unless you drove right down to Canos de Meca) - it was either dead calm, rainy or blowing a hooly direct off shore. But this is Tarifa, so there is always someone willing to have a go. These two kitesurfers on matching 12 mtr Core kites actually had a real blast down by the mouth of the Rio Jara - despite it being a rather damp, overcast Sunday, with a 'muy floco' offshore wind:

Whatever the weather in this beautifully wild place, there is always something to watch - like the amazing wind sculptures, stunning birdlife or this guy flashing his not so white bits on a warm Monday afternoon down at the Arte Vida beach (maybe he had lost his socks and vest):

Holiday Romance Blossoms in Tarifa - OCT09

It all started last summer - when a certain stowaway realised there was more to Tarifa life than just surfing ... hard to believe I know!!! He noticed others had friends to share their fun. And so he looked high and low in the old town, in the discos and on the many beautiful beaches until one day he spotted a vision of blonde loveliness approaching in the distance:

He eyed her up sideways and realised she was a real catch, so he tried to discretely get her attention and impress her with his balancing skills. Unfortunately, he passed out from all the blood rushing to his head but when he came round - there she was, at his side helping him up to his feet with a big smile:

They talked, went for long walks, messed about in the sand dunes, played on the kids swings and got to know each other really well ... soon, there were inseparable:

Then one special night, he asked her round for a drink on the spacious terrace of his designer studio on Los Lances Beach (La Tortuga I, of course!). Things were going so well that he decided to ask her if she would like to stay the night ...

At that point, she blushed a little as they realised they were still being photgraphed and asked the film crew, production manager and makeup team to leave them...

So we still don't know what happened that night or whether they will be seeing each other again. Let's hope we spot them in Tarifa again soon ... maybe we might see them in one of the many Tarifa bars, cruising the Paseo Maritimo, cycling around the port or maybe celebrating Navidad in San Mateo church!!!

Whatever happened, lets hope they at least got to kiss each other goodbye!!!

Just a few images from our belated summer break. Jan did lots of cycling and physio to get used to her new knee and I did a bit of kiting to see what badly bruised ribs feel like - that laguna is fun but just a tad too shallow in places!!!

The Months Fly By ... So Do The Birds !!!!

Once again, the seasons have changed and we have been able to get out to our beloved Tarifa. The town was fairly quiet this Spring and the weather rather fickle. We had everything from nice steady on shore Poniente winds, right up to 'sandburn on the back of your legs' monster off shore Levante winds and a few calm days in between for Jan to work on her tan!

Still, we got about a bit and had a really chilled time and I even got out on the water just to prove I can still kite! I also had the privilege of launching (and landing) one of the Tarifean airforce down at Valdevaqueros/Las Dunas - he was one of only two kites out in a Force 8 off shore on a tiny 5mtr kite. Balls of steel, brain of rock!!!!

We also saw a amazing early morning gathering of massive birds of prey in the hills on the way to Bolonia. We stopped and watched for 20 minutes as each waited for the right moment to spread out 6 feet of beautifil brown wings to lift up effortlessly - right in front of us, so close we felt we had to duck down as they cleared the ridge and headed up into the early breeze!

Anyway, must dash - here are a few piccies - Jan wasn't as mobile as usual (her repalcement knee operation was looming), but she got some great shots from close range - including a kitchen sink literally 'in transit'. Enjoy ...

A Winter's Tale - Fun in the Sun

Just a few short words and a couple of piccies to remind us of Tarifa. The weather gods were kind to us this winter and although there was rather a lot of strong offshore Levante wind, we had plenty of fun bike rides and a wonderful Christmas brunch on the beach. I also got an awesome kitsurfing session in a light onshore Poniente wind with a great swell on a surprisingly warm Boxing Day, right in front of the studio.

Cant wait to get back out there as soon as possible ...

Seasons in the Sun - Tarifa's Wonderful Weather

The world spins, it travels round the sun and there goes another wonderful Autumn in Tarifa. We had every kind of weather this time - fog, rain, dead calm, glorious sun, offshore Levante wind and finally a high tide which flooded the lagoon due to the Force 7 Poniente (yes - that nice steady cross onshore wind that we get all winter ... usually).

So the choice of clothes, activities and location was done on the spur of the moment and often changed three times in one day. Still we had a wonderful time - exploring, cycling, wrestling with the beach tent, flying kites, watching sunsets, drinking shandy (!) and whilst the town was a bit quieter than usual, there were still plenty of bars / restaurants open and interesting people (and camper vans) to watch.

Oh, and the new building developments behind us on Los Lances are almost complete - so just a couple of cranes remain on the skyline and I guess, despite the credit crunch, we will start to see a few more new faces next year.

The Time Goes By So Quickly ...

Can't believe that we have been back out to Tarifa a couple of times already and September has come round again!!! Thought we would drop a few nice piccies from our last trip onto the blog to keep it current.

I used my brand new Naish Helix 14mtr loads of times, which worked really well in the very variable conditions we got and my Naish Shockwave 9mtr in the stronger stuff. Set up with the new Naish Smart Loop bar and lines, I felt really comfortable and in control. Sadly, a novice kitesurfer had drowned the week before whilst under instruction, which reminded us all that safety is so important in this extreme but awesome sport.

Jan smuggled in a kidnap victim from her school canteen and he looks like he had a wild time.

We also met a whole bunch of lovely people - of various ages and had lots of relaxed fun. We even did a bit of dancing outside the new improved Serengeti beach bar just next to La Tortuga I on Los Lances Beach.

UK seems very cold and dark now - cant wait to get back out in October.

Tarifa Time Again!!! (with link to our Facebook)

Just a short message this time to get a couple of new piccies onto the blog - including our new kittens, Domino and Da Vinci, who had to stay in the UK while we were away and got even sleepier and bit bigger.

We had a great time out in Tarifa this Xmas, including a very uplifting midnight mass with the locals in San Mateo church. We met Chris Skone-Roberts (photographer and dog wrestler) and Karen (photographer and dog chaser) from Lazy Blue Skies - check out their web site to see some great kitesurfing shots. They live out in Tarifa and are often seen out and about in their funky van or on the beach / in the water - depending whether they are working or playing!

We had lots of different weather this visit but it was just great to be on the beach, messing about, trying out new kites (with my neighbour) and trucking all over town on our trusty (not yet rusty) mountain bikes.

Our TarifaStudios Facebook is starting to build up - I can see how people get addicted to the thing - its great fun just trying to figure out what to look at, what to join and what to ignore. We have joined the 'ikitesurf' Facebook group (thanks for the tip Chris) where I found a really great Tarifa based business / website run by Kev and Lisa (http://highflyerstarifa.com/).

We will still keep this blog going but it is SOOOO much easier (and quicker) to post our photos to Facebook - so if you want to see lots more about Tarifa - then use this link to ask to become a 'friend'.

We can't wait to get back out to Tarifa again but we have plenty to do in the UK before then (Burns Nite Supper, Cirque Du Soleil, Edinburgh and even a trip to Mull) ... oh and do some work (I nearly forgot!!!).

Long Time No Post

Well, what can I say ... its just been far too long since I posted anything!!! We had a truely wonderful time in Tarifa back in October and Jan took some great pictures - a selected few are shown below for your entertainment and delight!

La Tortuga I finally got its long awaited new coat of paint - it was a bit orange at first but we soon got used to the glow and it does look a lot better now the whole building has been done. The new developments a few streets behind us continue to take shape and are look pretty posh. Also, there seemed to be chiringitos on the beach until later this year compared to previous seasons (the Soul Bar was still going strong when we left) ... I guess we can call it all progress. Ironically, Tarifa was in fact very quite - even for that time of year.

Apparently, there had been torential rain the day before we arrived and there was a flood so Cheno, our diligent gardner / handyman had to rescue the lawn ... Its all looking pretty tidy now though:

We will be back out soon to enjoy the clean winter air and so that I can rub the rust off my bones and get out kiting again - on land and on sea!!! A neighbour in La Tortuga let slip that he had a kite buggy that he hadn't been out on for a couple of years (due to young family growing up) - so maybe I can convince him to let me have a shot. its about the only kite related toy that I havn't yet got!!!

Midsummer Madness

Well, what can I say ... We finally got back out to our home from home in glorious Tarifa - a month for Jan, three weeks for me and four days for our niece (Anette) and it was all just wonderful.

Okay, August is the busiest time of the year; I read in the local El Duende paper that Tarifa's population triples from 20,000 to 60,000 plus we can't kite right in front of the studio like the rest of the year, but the place still has such a 'chilled vibe' - despite the traffic and busy beaches. And, there is always something to see and do - either weaving in and out of the 300 kites on the Dos Mares end of Los Lances beach, listening to great live music in the Chiringuito bars and in the old town squares or just people watching - EVERYWHERE. The great thing is that with 11km of beach - there is always a quite spot somewhere - especially when the Levante is blowing!!!

Tarifa is slowly expanding with the new La Vega Poligono Comercial (Business Park) opening up (hurray, we now have a great Plus supermarket just five minutes walk away) and they are rapidly completing the urbanisation of La Marina at the back of the Estadio de Fútbol on Los Lances. Although this housing scheme is very small scale compared to Costa del Sol standards, it will give a slightly different feel to 'our' end of town but I am sure it will be for the better once all the building work is completed. Thankfully, they all look pretty tasteful and there aren't any high rise blocks - there will also be a large pool / garden area (although lets hope the little fields in front with their cows, horses and chickens survive for a while longer).

Some good news (for us and our guests) is that La Jaima disco on the other side of the Football Stadium has been demolised and the site cleared - although, the clubbers amongst you needn't worry, as this most famous of Tarifa's 'carpas' (literally 'tents') has been reborn at the back of the business park - along with a couple of other new ones like 'Space' and 'Stuk'. If they stick a bit closer to their licenced hours (closing at 3 am weekdays and 4am on weekends and festive holidays rather than pushing their luck, sometimes until 6 or 7am) then everyone will be happy - even the local mayor (Miguel Manella), who had to shut some of them (and confiscate the sound systems from a few bars) for ignoring the laws on opening hours and music (as the Serenguti found out to their cost only last week).

Another bit of improvement is that the promemande (Passeo Maritimo) has now been fully completed with the showers all connected and new lights installed and working - so beach goers can now wash away the sand, campers can get ready for their night out (as Miss Czech Republic with her Black BMW estate seems to do every evening at 5:30pm on the dot) plus we can walk or cycle right from the studio to the old town/port (even at night).

Also, La Tortuga I is finally having her facelift - although it took a few days to get over the shock of the bright new 'yellow'. The painters (Manci and Antonio from Bianchi Pinturas) have now become part of the family - they say the job seems a bit like the never ending painting of the Forth Road Bridge in Edinburgh or the Golden Gate in San Fransico!!!

And finally, the weather was a bit wierd (30+ dec C most days plus Poniente / Levante / nothing / clouds / rain / blue skies) ... but the climates are changing all over the world (often with disaterous consequences and not just for the less developed countries) so we just enjoyed whatever the day brought and chose the most suitable activites. The days went by all too quickly - either kitesurfing (I used all of my kites from 9mtr to 16mtr and my new Nobile 666 board), landboarding (which I really clicked with this time round, as the lagoon had flooded and compacted the sand right along the back of the beach), moutain biking (along the prom or out to the new bird watchers' hide by the Rio Jara), shopping (derrh!!) or just chilling on our very private terrace and watching the beach life, the ebb and flow of the locals and the passing travellers in the car park below.

So we are now back at work and starting to think about getting back out to Tarifa in October - hope you get there even sooner!!!

Mad Mud Mix, Kites & Madeleine

GLASTONBURY - It seems like everyone (including our lovely niece and all her gang of friends) has gone to Glastonbury Festival this week end (22-24JUN) - except us, much to Jan's disappointment (I just couldn't face the crazy crowds, camping rough with 140,000 hippies plus the 3 day long queues for the toilets !!!) ...

... and as predicted, the torrential rain has arrived (as its seems to do each time the festival is on) so the price of wellie boots has gone through the roof and the mud is getting deeper. We still wished we were there to see the amazing line up of bands and all the side shows - but we had to make do with watching it on BBC TV or seeing the sheer size of the event on one of the festival web cams.

KITESURF COMMERCIAL - I managed to get two of my Naish kites, that I brought back from Tarifa last time, photographed and onto eBay. Already had some a couple of bids - so I am hoping to sell them both (X2 10mtr and X3 20mtr):

TARIFA CALLS - Once again, we can't wait to be back out in Tarifa. I kited just about everyday last time and we biked a lot. Jan didn't take quite as many piccies but enough to remind us what a great place it is to be at any time of the year - but especially in La Prima Vera (Spring to us Brits):

MADELEINE McCANN - We have all been touched by the awful abduction of this lovely little child (who comes from close to where we work and live in the UK), from Praia da Luz - the Portuguese holiday resort where Madeleine was taken on 03MAY07 during a family vacation. Her posters were up on the port building entrance in Tarifa (as well as in Gibraltar airport). We are all praying that she might still be found and her parents can start to try to put their lives back together ... somehow.

Music, Motion, Memories & Moggies

Well, not long now until we will be back in glorious Tarifa. May/June is always such a wonderful time of the year to be on the Costa de la Luz - not too hot and so fresh. We will be back on our mountain bikes, flashing past the local pedestrians plus I have my new Naish Shockwave kite to try out - it will be great to be back on the water for the first time since Xmas. Jan will probably pick up a few new friends, as usual:

MUSIC - To keep the UK blues away, we went to see an amazing African band in Leicester last week. They are Tuareg ex-freedom fighters from Mali who now play the most hypnotic Saharan blues/rock to promote peace. Here a some very atmospheric pictures that Jan took of Tinariwen (meaning 'empty spaces' in their native tongue Tamashek) at their concert in Leicester De Montfort Hall. I have also added the band to our Google Video pick list on the left hand side panel:

MOTION - As a birthday treat for me, I went indoor skydiving at Bodyflight in Bedford, a couple of weeks ago. Five minutes amazing freefall in 120 mile an hour winds in the world's largest vertical wind tunnel, with an instructor to help you learn to fly. You have to see it (or do it) to believe it, the professionals make it look so easy in their video clips (I have added them to our Google Video pick list on the left):

MEMORIES - I was tidying up our ever growing digital photo collection and thinking about our 25th wedding anniversary, which is due this year. We are off up to Edinburgh in July to celebrate - so I couldn't resist putting a few 'happy couple' pictures onto the blog. Being together for over a quarter of a century hasnt been easy (Jan deserves a medal) but we are still looking after each other and still learning new things about each other every day:

MOGGIES - Finally, I also realised that it will soon be a year since we had cats in the house. We plan to get a couple of rescue cats when we are back from the summer break. We will always miss Sledge Hammer (our soppy black & white male) and Lucy (our fiesty grey female) who both lived into their late teens (shown below) and the other great cats we have had (Leonardo and Jenner), going right back to Jan's first cat (Katie) who we inherited from her mother.

Anyway, must dash and get on with my weekend jobs - hope to see you on the beach, soon.

Missing Tarifa Life

Well its Spring here in the UK already and after a few warm days, lots of rain and even some snow showers, winter is drawing to a close (we hope!!!) and finally our clocks have gone forward. We are really missing our walks along the beach, mountain biking up the brand new promenade to the port and watching those amazing sunsets:

Sadly, we wont be there for Semana Santa (Easter Week) this year - so we will miss watching all those dedicated locals paying respect to their devout faith by carrying barefoot, those huge decorated icons of Jesus and Mary along the narrow streets of the old town for hours each night. We will also miss those 'cute' little window displays:

Anyway, at least we will get there for a week at the end of May and we will be back out out for a month in August.

Meantime, I can at least keep an eye on the local kitesurfing talent via the web cam from Karmasurfer (clever pun, or what?) which I recently added to our TarifaStudios web site. It is half way down Los Lances beach (near Canos II apartments) and gives an excellent snapshot view across the beach down towards Las Dunas ( with 10sec refresh):

Winter in Sunny Tarifa

We really can't believe that it is January 2007 already ...

Most people seem to post blogs every nano second and I have managed to get up to 4 postings in five months - ouch!! Maybe I am just really busy ... the truth is I don't have that much to say - I just wanted to have somewhere to put a few of our Tarifa photos and some useful links about Tarifa, the Andalucia area and kite surfing.

So here is a few samples of what Tarifa was looking like recently. These two intrepid divers (at Torre de la Pena I) seemed extremely delighted with their speared fish - as a veggie, I cant see the fun but they even took pictures of the harpoon gun!!! Try clicking on the picture to see the proud expression on the guys face.

After just two initial days of torrential rain, the weather stayed very warm, dry and windy most of the 2 weeks we were there ... Town was very quite but livened up around New Year. I did a bit of kiting and some great landboarding.

We were out for the whole of Xmas and New Year and I managed to get a few video clips of the locals kite surfing on Jan's new mobile - its not great quality and I haven't added any music. The clips were taken from the same spot as these pictures which we took the next day when the wind had really blown up - its just up from the port on the dead end causeway out to the military island.

We also had fun on our newly acquired budget mountain bikes doing daily runs up the spanking new promenade (Paseo Maritimo) which now links right up from TarifaStudios up to the island and into the port / old own. They have also put a wooden walk way that runs out towards the Rio Jara which is open to push bikes (despite the protestations of some of the older locals!!!)

And I have just bought a new Naish 9mtr Shockwave bow kite (via www.lonasport.com - great prices and delivered from Germany to UK in perfect condition in under 3 days) - so I cant wait to get back out to Tarifa to find out if it kites as good as it looks.

Another Post ... At Last !!!!

I cant believe another month has shot past. Been busy with work, helping out with an Anxiety Conference and trying to keep the home fires burning. Anyway, we didnt get chance to shoot any video but here are a few photos that we took in and around Tarifa while we were there in early Nov 2006. Enjoy, David.

And we replaced the old panelling with some nice fencing on our terrace (above) - IT BLEW AWAY IN THE FORCE 7 LEVEANTE!!!!

Google Video Search

Been playing around with with Google's new Video content using the AJAX API search code that I found via the rather clever http://ajaxsearch.blogspot.com/ site. Fortunately, I found the much more easy to follow, step by step guide on: http://www.google.com/uds/solutions/videosearch/index.html

It is very clever stuff but the random amatuer video clips can be a bit sad. I have tried to find something that will give you a feel for what Tarifa and Costa de la Luz is like plus some other searches that show how the embedded video search & play works.

We plan to make our own video clips up as soon as we get back out to Tarifa at the end of October - in the meantime you will have to make do with the lucky dips into the Google video frog spawn. Makes you realise how the Internet repesents such a cross section of tastes and sometimes questionable decency (at least Google seems to keep any hard core stuff off their site).

I found some really amazing Parkour clips - I have always admired these 'urban guerilla gymnasts' but I have only ever seen them once in real life in Birmingham around the town square civic fountains.

I will also be adding our Tarifa picture gallery soon to let you see what a beautiful and unspoilt part of Spain this is - how lucky we are to be able to get to stay their four or five times a year.

Hello World from Tarifa Studios

Well having used the Internet since BEFORE the web was created ... I have finally got down to blogging.

I have managed to resist this whole new Web 2.0 social software trend for a while now (mostly due to living in Leicester and working in London and so never having time to play with the new stuff) but I guess I just had to try it for myself....

Plus we also needed somewhere cheap and easy to put the 100's of beautiful photos of Tarifa, Souther Spain that my art teacher wife (Jan) has taken over the past few years since we bought out 'room to relax' right on the beach in Tarifa. We have our own web site (www.tarifastudios.com) but we haven't yet got a photo gallery.

Anyway, no idea who I might be writing this for but at least we can say we have now got a blog!!!

Will be back soon with piccies and some stuff about the amazing mix of lifestyles and cultures that hit us whenever we get time to relax in our little studio on the beach in Tarifa.
